representative pieces of Keith's other work
I usually manage to find a way of adding a carved element or two to add interest to otherwise somewhat rectilinear pieces.
A Graduation Box
A commemorative presentation box made from woods of sentimental value to the client. Hand cut dovetails an with inner compartment of reclaimed Kauri wood. Top is shop sawn spalted maple veneer with an inset sugar maple elliptical medallion with hand cut Roman numerals. Woods: Maple, Californian Redwood, Holly, Flowering Dogwood and ancient Kauri wood. The finish is multiple coats of shellac lightly hand rubbed out to a satin gloss.
Coffee Table
Curly cherry wood top from a special wide board that finally found its perfect use. The top edges were beveled to add to its sense of elegance and lightness. The legs are joined to the apron using traditionally pinned mortise and tenon joinery. The finish is a natural danish oil followed by three coats of hand rubbed durable urethane.
Live edge slab Coffee Table
With careful cutting, this slab of live edge white oak yielded enough material for the top, lower stretcher and both legs. The top highlights all of the beauty of natures handiwork...the tightly swirled figured knot and live edges on both sides. The stretcher and legs are hand beveled to add subtle accent.
Side Table
The top is a special piece of birds eye maple that also had a rare ingrown bark that I endeavored to highlight as a design feature. All four sides are symmetrically curved and then chisel beveled to get away from a simple rectangle. The cast iron legs were salvaged from the base of an old school desk circa 1900. Their gentle revere curves echo those of the table top. Finish is a clear water based urethane rubbed to a satin sheen
Compass Rose Inlay
I made this inlay panel as a trial sample board. Layout is of the traditional eight points of the compass accentuated in contrasting woods...in this case alternating holly rosewood. Accuracy of layout and cutting is paramount in a piece of this nature. The compass rose is inlayed into a solid 1" thick mahogany board. Left natural with no applied finish other than a light paste wax.
